Road Map for July: Class of 2028

Summer is the perfect time to recharge, and it’s also an excellent opportunity to reflect on the first half of your high school experience and begin preparing for what’s ahead. The choices you make over the next year will play an important role in your college search and application process, so a little planning now can make junior year much less stressful.

One of the most valuable projects you can tackle this summer is creating or updating your résumé. Think broadly about what belongs on it—clubs, sports, music, paid work, volunteer service, leadership roles, family responsibilities, hobbies, or other meaningful commitments. Not only can a résumé help you apply for jobs or internships, but it also provides a head start on the activities section of your college applications and the brag sheets you’ll share with teachers and counselors when requesting letters of recommendation next spring.

It’s also a good time to fit a few college visits into your summer travel and start thinking about fall tours. At this stage, the goal isn’t to start building your list, but simply to better understand what you’re looking for, which will allow the next steps in your search to be more focused. And if you haven’t taken a practice SAT and ACT yet, this is the ideal time to determine which exam better matches your strengths, map out your testing dates and consider summer prep while your schedule is more flexible.
