14 Oct Road Map for October: Juniors
The days are getting shorter and your to-do list is getting longer. Take care of yourself during this busy time by making sure to get enough sleep, exercise, and other things that make you feel refreshed.
Most of you took the PSAT this week—I hope it went well! Remember that unless you expect to be in the running for recognition or scholarships from National Merit or other College Board partners, this test is strictly diagnostic. Follow up with a practice ACT; many test-prep companies offer free or inexpensive practice exams, or you can do it on your own. Then save the date for my upcoming event, College Admission Testing for the Class of 2021 and Beyond, on November 24 at the Hill Center, where Jen Dillon of AdeptPrep tutoring will join me in discussing how to develop a standardized testing plan. We will cover choosing your tests, creating a testing calendar and deciding how to prep. We’ll also be joined by Emily Lucio of Smart Start Educational Consulting, who will share what students with disabilities need to know about admissions testing.
Juniors should also consider attending the DC National College Fair on October 27, or check here to find a fair near you. Students planning to pursue degrees in the arts might want to attend a National Portfolio Day event (November 2 in DC) or the DC Performing and Visual Arts College Fair on November 3. Finally, parents of juniors should be aware that 2019 is the tax year that you’ll report on your student’s initial financial aid applications; it might be worthwhile to meet with your financial advisor before year-end to get your college funding plan up to date.
