Road Map for December: Sophomores

As we move toward the end of the year, this is a great moment to pause, reflect, and look ahead. What went well for you this year, either academically or personally? What challenges did you face, and how did you work through them? Understanding what helped you succeed, and where you needed support, can guide your decisions going forward. If something worked, think about how to keep that momentum. If something felt hard, consider who or what could help next time.

For many sophomores, this season also brings PSAT scores. Remember that these results are a snapshot, not a verdict. For sophomores especially, the PSAT is purely diagnostic and part of a longer process. You can continue to build your skills and make a thoughtful testing plan when the time is right.

Timing is also important for college financial planning. Most families are surprised to learn that there is a two-year lag between the “base year” income that is used in aid calculations and the year your student enrolls. So, for example, students heading to college in 2028 will be reporting 2026 income on their FAFSA and CSS Profile (January of sophomore year through December of junior year.) That might make it a good idea to touch base now with your financial advisor to review your college funding plan and think through any actions you may want to take before the end of 2025.

Finally, if you would benefit from individual advising for your college search and application process, I hope you’ll consider enrolling in my Sophomore Start package. Although I can’t promise anyone a stress-free process, there are things 10th graders can do this spring to lighten the junior year load, and you can lock in current rates if you enroll by January 31.  You can email me here or click here to schedule an introductory call to learn more.
