Back-to-School Road Map: Freshmen

Welcome to high school! My best college-related advice for 9th graders is to lay the foundation for a successful high school experience.  Give yourself a chance to adjust to the new routines and expectations, and be proactive in communicating with your parents, teachers, and others who want to support you.

The expectations are higher now, and you might benefit from working on your study skills.  If you’re in the DC area, check out this class offered in October by my colleague Paul Rivas.  (FYI: his August event sold out, so if you’re interested you’ll want to sign up soon.)  If you can’t make the event, check out his book or his new online class.

You also have new opportunities that may not have been available to you in middle school, such as new sports, clubs and activities.  Take advantage of this time to just try stuff out and see what you find interesting and fun.

Good luck!
