Road Map for December: Sophomores

As 2021 winds down, I hope you had a great year, as well as a great school year so far. Looking ahead, think about ways to make 2022 even better! What successes did you have this year? What challenges did you overcome? And more importantly, how did you achieve those successes and overcome those challenges? What could you do in 2022 to keep those successes going? If you can identify what you did right, find ways to continue to do those things. On the other hand, if you need support, think about who you might ask or where you might find it.

PSAT scores are out this week, and if you took the exam in October your scores will give you some sense of your strengths and weaknesses on this test. Remember, however, that this test is not necessarily an indicator of anything broader. I often see students who are surprised at how they did, either on the test overall or on one section. This is just an early indicator, especially since you may not even have completed all the math that will be on your SAT (or ACT.) By next year, and with another year of English classes under your belt, your scores will likely be even better. There’s nothing more to do with testing just yet, but if you’ll have Algebra 1 and 2 and Geometry completed this year, you may be able to get testing off your plate on the early side next year by planning ahead. If this sounds like a good idea, I hope you’ll get in touch with me.

I also have some financial aid advice this month for Class of 2024 parents. Did you know that you’ll be reporting 2022 income on your financial aid forms for the 2024-25 school year? This is a great time to meet with your financial advisor to discuss your college funding plan and anything you might want to do before the end of 2021, to prepare for your financial aid “base year.”
